How to Spend a Day in Lisbon

There really is something for everyone in Lisbon – it has all of the perks of a capital city, with a really relaxed vibe. There’s great shopping, lots of fantastic food options, a small beachfront and some beautiful architecture. Here’s some of my favourite things to do in Lisbon, if you find yourself lucky enough to be spending the day there!

Rossio Square

Start the day at Rossio Square, which is popular square in Lisbon lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Wake up slow with some breakfast at our favourite cafe in Rossio Square, the historical Cafe Nicola. This place is very popular and is often busy, so prepare to have to wait a few minutes to be seated.

Head down Rua do Carmo, a street just off Rossio Square, to do some shopping, with a great mix of high street stores and unique souvenir shops.

Arco da Rua Augusta

Just a 10 minute walk from Rossio Square is the iconic Arco da Rua Augusta, the gateway to Praça do Comércio. A day in Lisbon is not complete with a visit to this iconic spot! Take a picture under the archway or catch the elevator to the top of the arch for panoramic views of the city. Spend some time relaxing in Praça do Comércio, taking in the sights, enjoying the street performers and musicians, and browsing the market stalls.

Time Out Market

Enjoy some lunch at the Time Out Market, just a 15 minute walk from Arco da Rua Augusta. The Time Out Market is a huge food court with stalls selling food, wine, cocktails and deserts. There are also stalls outside of the food court selling flowers, books, and souvenirs. It does get busy here at lunchtime, but there’s plenty of seating available so it’s usually possible to get a table. Our favourite places to eat here are the Libertà Pasta Bar and Funky Chunky Cookies (for a sweet treat afterwards!)

Elvador de Bica

No trip to Lisbon is complete without a ride on one of the iconic yellow trams, a charming and nostalgic way to explore the city’s historic neighbourhoods. Our favourite is the Elvador De Bica, just a 5 minute walk from the Time Out Market. Elvador de Bica is a funicular that connects the lower Cais do Sodre district with the lively Bairro Alto. The tram makes the journey back and forth between the two districts and is a fun ride down the steepest street in Lisbon. You can pay cash onboard or if you get a day pass for transport in Lisbon, it is included.

Case Das Caolunas

End your day at the beachfront watching the sun set over the Tagus. There’s street musicians here which really add to the relaxing vibe, and there’s always someone making incredible sculptures out of sand! Easily one of my favourite spots in Lisbon. After the sun has set, head across the road to enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants in Praça do Comércio.
